Ashby Marketplace

Ashby Marketplace is a great little supermarket and snack-stop on the corner of College and Ashby.

As far as little privately-owned grocers go, Ashby Marketplace is great. It has that neighborhood grocery feel and a great Trader Joe's-esque selection of food, snacks and drinks. And an excellent sandwhich deli... with gluten-free bread for all you glu-tards out there!! The perfect place to get a sandwhich to smuggle into the Roma Cafe or to stock up for a picnic in the summer.

I give the Ashby Marketplace 4 stars... what do YOU think?

Farley's Coffee

Farley's East is a coffee house in Oakland on Grand between Broadway and Webster.

Cruising down Downtown Oakland's eerily empty evening streets, Farley's East is a warm shimmery oasis for cafe-goers. I first stumbled upon Farley's last night- New Year's Eve- where they were hosting a free comedy night... uh oh. But the place was packed, the comedy was actually great, and the vibe was comfortable and cozy. They have great food, a bulletin board with local art and events, and a general good vibe. They're hippity hopping and happening but not self conscious or hipster-y.

Check out their calendar at http://www.farleyscoffee.com/oakland.html for their next comedy night, go, and go early- it will fill up!!

I give Farley's East a solid 5 stars for being fabulous and a nice gem in an up-and-coming but otherwise devoid part of Oakland.... But more importantly, what do YOU think? Rate and comment about Farley's East here!
